Care for new Birds
>

1. Avoid cold drafts while transporting the bird home. Cover the cage to avoid additional stress.

2. Once home keep new birds in a separate cage.

3. Attach a heat lamp on top of the cage approximately 6 - 8 inches from the bird's head using a 60 watt bulb. This will stimulate their immure system to help fight the stress caused by the transition.

4. Supply an open water dish, seed and millet. Place the seed and water dishes near the top perch to make sure they find them.

5. Allow the birds to feed immediately undisturbed.

6. Keep birds free of activity from children and busy traffic to reduce stress. This will help the birds acclimate to their new surroundings.

7. Length of quarantine time is your choice. (Normally 2 - 4 weeks)

8. If releasing birds into an Aviary do so early in the day giving time for adjusting to the new surroundings.

9. If you are planning on pairing the new bird with an existing bird for breeding I would recommend you remove the existing bird from the cage for a few days. Release the new bird into the cage they will be sharing so it can get used to the surroundings before adding the existing bird. If possible you can allow them to see and hear each other without being together. This is done to avoid the stress of the existing bird chasing the new bird for breeding. The new bird will not know where it can go to hide.

10. Again .... Have an open water container for easy access during the first couple of days if using water tubes. Also I strongly recommend the heat lamp for the first few days.
